I am a specialist in both Pain Medicine and Psychiatry, which means my clinical practice is at the intersection of biological complexity and human psychology; the frontier where Dr Gregory House (TV character and my medical hero) operates.
In other words, I practice as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Pain Physician treating adults, adolescents and children. I have a flair for treating complex medical and mental health issues by leveraging my dual expertise to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms, and identifying connections that are often missed. This requires a deeply personalised and collaborative approach that respects and prioritises your values.
My clinical approach is built on how the mind and body affect each other, especially how psychological factors influence physical illness and vice versa.
Experience
I have 30 years of clinical experience in public, private and not-for-profit health care in New Zealand and abroad. This includes clinical leadership, advisory and teaching roles.
Patients will benefit from my extensive mental health expertise in neurodevelopmental conditions such as ASD and ADHD, OCD, phobias, psychosis and common presentations such as anxiety and depression.
You can take advantage of my expertise in managing complex physical and mental health conditions such as eating disorders, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, functional neurological symptoms and adapting your life to chronic illness.
I am passionate about making a difference. You will find me speaking at international conferences, lecturing at universities, providing advice and expert opinions for Pharmac, the Health and Disabilities Commissioner, ACC, the Medical Council of New Zealand and occasionally in legal settings. You may have also heard me being interviewed in the media.
I am a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, ensuring that my practice meets the highest vocational standards in Aotearoa. I’m a self-confessed medical-geek and keep up to date by reading the latest scientific literature, undertaking ongoing training and attending international conferences.
